This Ain't No Disco! - Concert Film All-Dayer

An all-day event consisting great concert films - from all-time classics to seldom-seen rarities. Because of the nature of the event, with people (hopefully!) coming and going throughout the day, there is no need to book - though you will still need to be a member (natch). Annual membership is £20 (payable in cash, please!) and entitles you a year’s worth of FREE weekly screenings and 20% off food in the Vine on a film club night. (& the 20% off will be able to be used on Sunday, roast fans!) The programme is as follows… (obviously we know there’s LOADS more fantastic concert films we could have picked - but rest assured, if the day is a success we’ll definitely be repeating it…)

12.30 - 2.00pm

Aretha Franklin: Amazing Grace (Alan Elliot, Sydney Pollack, USA, 2018)

We thought it’d be fitting to begin our Sunday with a trip to church - the New Bethel Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles, circa January 1972, to be specific. This documentary/concert film captures Aretha Franklin with her choir in all their righteous glory .

2.15 - 3.00pm

Bob Dylan: Hard Rain (Jacques Levy, USA, 1976)

On September 14, 1976, NBC broadcast Hard Rain, a concert film recorded at the second-to-last date of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. While the first leg of the tour was characterised by an infectious joie de vivre, by the tour’s end nerves were well and truly frazzled - the result is a stunningly ragged and glorious show that really should get an official release.

3.15 – 4.45pm

Bruce Springsteen: No Nukes (David Silver, USA, 1979)

The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concert from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band from the September 1979 MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Cleanse your minds of Jeremy Allen White and check out the real Boss at the height of his powers.

5.00 – 6.00pm

Morrissey: Live in Dallas

The less said about 21st Century Morrissey the better. So here’s a reminder of why his fall from grace has been so heartbreakingly disappointing: a TOTALLY WIRED show from Morrissey's first tour as a solo artist, from Dallas Starplex Amphitheatre, 17th June 1991 before an audience of 11,000 people. The film captures a genuinely exciting performance from the young Moz and his band (easily the second best band of his career) in which the whole show appears to be trembling on the brink of collapse. Morrissey would never be quite this wild on-stage again.

6.15 – 7.45pm

REM: Tourfilm (Jim McKay, Michael Stipe, USA, 1992)

REM’s triumphant 1989 North American tour in support of their major-label debut, the Green album, which captures the band at one of their live peaks as they finally step (or shimmy) into the major league, with an infectious confidence. Tourfilm captures a band seizing their moment and running with it.

8.00 - 9.30pm

Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense (Jonathan Demme, USA, 1984)

Quite simply one of the greatest concert films ever made (that said: see all the above!). A live performance of Talking Heads shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983.
