The Cruise (Bennett Miller, USA, 1998)

  • The Vine 86 Highgate Road London, England, NW5 1PB United Kingdom (map)
I get letters from people who would like to make a movie. My advice could be, find a subject like Speed Levitch and follow him around with a video camera. That’s what Bennett Miller did — directing, producing and photographing The Cruise.
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Employed by the Gray Line bus company, which pays him $200 a week for part-time work, highly eccentric tour guide, Timothy "Speed" Levitch, shares historical facts with his captive audience, noting where renowned literary figures lived and frequented. But Levitch is also eager to impart odd philosophical beliefs as he discusses his life and his love/hate relationship with Manhattan. This black-and-white documentary was the debut film from non-prolific director Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball, Foxcatcher) and is a lovingly entertaining portrait of the kind of character only New York City could produce.
