Went The Day Well? (Alberto Cavalcanti, UK, 1942)

  • The Vine 86 Highgate Road London, England, NW5 1PB United Kingdom (map)
A wartime conspiracy thriller, a black-comic nightmare and a surrealist masterpiece...
— Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

World War II, and the sleepy English village of Bramley becomes the unwitting host to a squad of Nazi paratroopers disguised as British soldiers - the advance post for a full-scale invasion! But the Nazis haven't reckoned on the plucky bulldog spirit as the villagers rise up against their fascist guests and reveal a ruthlessness quite at odds with their quaintly bucolic manners... With a cast that includes David Farrar, Thora Hird and Patricia Hayes, this rarely seen curio from Ealing Studios is loosely based on a 1940 magazine story by Graham Greene and is a classic piece of British war-time propaganda.
