Seconds (John Frankenheimer, USA, 1966)

  • The Vine 86 Highgate Road London, England, NW5 1PB United Kingdom (map)
“US suburbia boredom is treated in an original manner in this cross between a sci-fi opus, a thriller, a suspense pic and a parable on certain aspects of American middle-class life.”
— Variety

60th Anniversary Screening (Wayne's just written an article in celebration of Seconds for the Quietus, so it seemed silly not to schedule a repeat screening.)

John Randolph stars (initially) as Arthur Hamilton: a paunchy, middle-aged banker who, dissatisfied with his safe suburban existence, elects to undergo a strange and elaborate medical procedure (courtesy of a shady organisation known only as The Company) that will grant him a brand new youthful identity. But when post-op Arthur Hamilton comes out looking like Rock Hudson, he discovers that settling into a brand new youthful identity is easier said than done... Rock Hudson gives it his all (and then some) in John Frankenheimer's criminally underseen and incredibly influential Kafkaesque cult classic - one of the strangest and singular films of the 60s.
