12 Angry Men (Sidney Lumet, USA, 1957)

Too few films take on the art of arguing as a subject; we could certainly use more of them, but until then, Lumet’s window into strained civic duty will continue to serve mightily.

As chosen from our list of Also-Rans by The Temple of Dumb: the winning team of our quarterly film quiz.

Sidney Lumet’s debut movie is a tense courtroom drama in which a team of jurors clash over what initially looks to be a brutal case of patricide. A fantastic cast includes Jack Warden, Lee J Cobb, Jack Klugmann, Ed Begley, and, of course, Henry Fonda as the juror who first expresses doubt on the guilt of the young man whose life depends upon their verdict.
