Play it Again, Sam (Herbert Ross, USA, 1972)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
The Allen-Keaton sparks are off the charts. There’s a reason they would go onto highly successful ‘70s collaborations...No surprise, Keaton is the heart of the pic. Her magical comedic gifts help elevate the silliest moments...
— Frank J. Avella, The Contending

Woody Allen plays Allan Felix, an angst-ridden film critic with a Humphrey Bogart obsession whose recent divorce has left him lonely and depressed. As his two married friends Dick (Tony Roberts) and Linda (Diane Keaton) set up Allan on a series of disastrous (and genuinely hilarious) dates, Allan finds himself falling in love with Linda… Connection to True Romance? In much the same way as Clarence’s obsession with Elvis in True Romance manifests itself as an imaginary Presley giving Clarence pep talks throughout the film, Allan has an imaginary Boggie give him absolutely terrible-advice on how to manage his love-life… Adapted from his hit Broadway production, Play it Again, Sam, is one of the finest examples of Woody’s “early, funny films” (and marked the begining of his romantic and professional relationship with Diane Keaton).
