“Stephen Fry brings a depth and gentleness to the role that says what can be said about Oscar Wilde: that he was a funny and gifted idealist in a society that valued hypocrisy above honesty...”
Stephen Fry stars as celebrated writer Oscar Wilde, the toast of Victorian society, whose homosexuality is a closely-guarded secret. But after falling for the younger Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Jude Law), Wilde incurs the wrath of Bosie’s father, the Marquess of Queensberry (Tom Wilkinson), leading to a court case which leaves Wilde’s reputation in tatters. Wilde is perhaps the greatest on-screen depiction of Oscar Wilde, and the supporting cast includes Michael Sheen, Vanessa Redgrave, Zoë Wanamaker and, as Wilde’s wife, Constance, the always-great Jennifer Ehle.
