Vivre sa vie (My Life to Live) (Jean-Luc Godard, France, 1962)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
This is a great movie, and I am not surprised to find Susan Sontag describing it as ‘one of the most extraordinary, beautiful, and original works of art that I know of.’
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Screened in tribute to Jean-Luc Godard (1930 - 2022)

Anna Karina plays Nana, a young Parisian who aspires to be an actress but instead ends up a prostitute, her downward spiral depicted in a series of discrete tableaux of daydreams and dances. Featuring some of Karina and Godard’s most iconic moments—from her movie theater vigil with The Passion of Joan of Arc to her seductive pool-hall strut — Vivre sa vie is a landmark of the French New Wave that still surprises at every turn.
