24 Hour Party People (Michael Winterbottom, UK, 2002)

So It Goes.jpg
Thanks to an excellent script from Frank Cottrell Boyce, brilliant cinematography by the legendary Robby Müller and intelligent direction by Winterbottom, the film is constantly amusing and fascinating.
— Mark Adams, Hollywood Reporter

Steve Coogan stars as the legendary Tony Wilson: news reporter for Granada Television whose life changes in 1976 after witnessing the now-legendary Sex Pistols gig at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall. Inspired to start putting on local bands (Joy Division, The Durutti Column) start his own record label (Factory Records) and open a nightclub (the Hacienda) his enthusiasm over his business acumen proves to be both his strength and, ultimately, his downfall. With a screenplay by Frank Cottrell Boyce, 24 Hour Party People is an entertaining romp (and we do mean romp) through the heady Manchester music scene of the late 70s - early 90s. A great supporting cast includes Paddy Considine, Shirley Henderson, Andy Serkis, John Simm, Peter Kay, Rob Brydon, Simon Pegg, Christopher Eccleston, and blink-n-you'll-miss-him, dear old & much missed Mark E Smith.
