Persona (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1966)

A film we return to over the years, for the beauty of its images and because we hope to understand its mysteries.
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Times

Liv Ullmann stars as Elisabet Vogler, a highly-regarded-but-suddenly-mute stage actress. Along with her nurse, Alma (Bibi Andersson), she is moved to a cottage to convalesce. As Alma cares for Elisabet she finds herself confiding in her more and more and begins to have trouble distinguishing herself from her silent patient.

Beautifully shot and hauntingly enigmatic, Persona is also one of Bergman's most influential films and the likes of David Lynch, Robert Altman and Nicolas Roeg clearly owe it a huge debt.
