Easter Double-Bill: Miner's Hymns (Bill Morrison, UK, 2010) & Trouble No More (Jennifer Lebeau, USA, 2017)

This Easter we proudly present for your entertainment a Tufnell Park Film Club first: a double bill!

In tribute to the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson who died earlier this year we wanted desperately to screen Bill Morrison's documentary about the ill-fated coal mining communities in North East England, The Miners' Hymns.  Jóhann Jóhannsson not only co-wrote it with Morrison but also provided the beautiful score. The only snag: it's only 52 minutes long.

Both being massive fans of Bob Dylan, or, if you will, Bob Cats, we've also wanted desperately to screen the recently released Trouble No More: a concert documentary about Dylan's born again period of the late 70s. The only snag: it's only 60 minutes long. Cue brainwave: why not screen these two musical documentaries - one an elegy to a once vibrant community, the other a spiritual and creative rebirth - over Easter as double-bill? (death, rebirth, etc.)

And so we have.

The Miners' Hymns - A film by Bill Morrison. The Miners' Hymns is a inspired documentary depicting the ill-fated mining community in North East England. The film, which tells its story entirely without words, features a original score by the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and rare archival footage selected and edited by the American filmmaker Bill Morrison.
It's Bob Dylan like you've never seen him. Featuring Michael Shannon as the Preacher, Trouble No More: A Musical Film premieres February 26 at 10PM.
