Heaven Can Wait (Warren Beatty/Buck Henry, USA, 1978)

[The film] has everything going for it: big laughs, populist politics, billowy sequences set in heaven, a murder plot, a climactic Super Bowl game, a supporting cast of choice comic actors, and best of all, a touching (but PG) romance.

Warren Beatty stars (and co-directed with Buck Henry; and co-wrote with Elaine May!) as Los Angeles Rams quarterback, Joe Pendleton, who is accidentally taken away from his body by an overanxious angel before he was meant to die. By the time the mistake is noticed it's too late and Joe's human body has already been cremated, so a new body must be found. Great New Hollywood comedy which garnered 8 Oscar nominations, with a quite brilliant cast which includes Buck Henry (who also co-directed, etc), Julie Christie, James Mason, Jack Warden and Charles Grodin.
