“Indisputably one of the great American films, its power undiminished.”
Screened in tribute to Eva Marie Saint (1924 - 2026)
Marlon Brando stars as Terry Malloy, ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman, struggling to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, local mob boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) and his older brother, Charlie (Rod Steiger). But when Terry meets Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the grieving sister of one of the syndicate's victims, he starts to question his loyalties... Eva Maria Saint's big screen debut is one of the most striking in cinematic history, while Brando's portrayal of the doomed Terry can be seen to have influenced the acting styles of the New Hollywood generation of the 1970s.
