A fine movie, a wonderfully comic tale we didn’t quite expect from a director who seems more at home with violence than with humour.
— Roger Ebert

It’s 1908 and Grizzled old-school fronstiersman Cable Hogue (Jason Robards) has made a fortune selling water to thirsty desert travellers. He’s also lying in wait… for the day that the two no-account rats - who long ago robbed him and left him for dead in the baking Arizona sand - drop by for a drink... After the violence of The Wild Bunch, director Sam Peckinpah shifted mood with this memorable fable, less a tale of revenge than it a lyrical, touching tribute to the last days of the West’s pioneering spirit. Stella Stevens and David Warner lead an excellent supporting cast that also includes LQ Jones and Strother Martin as Hogue’s old enemies.
