Girlfriends (Claudia Weill, USA, 1978)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
A little indie gem and lo-fi miracle whose emotional force catches you glancingly...
— Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

Screened as part of the Scalarama and Directed by Women celebrations.

Susan Weinblatt (Melanie Mayron) is an aspiring photographer in New York City whose life is upturned when her roommate Anne (Anita Skinner) unexpectedly annouces she is getting married. A witty and melancholic take on love and loneliness in the big city, Girlfriends started life as a 30 minute short funded by a grant from the American Film Institute and grew into a full length independent movie - one whose influence can still be felt today in the films of Greta Gerwig and Lena Durham's Girls. Melanie Mayron is brilliantly sympathetic and relatable in the main role, and there's fantastic support from Bob Balaban and a very young Christopher Guest - taking a rare turn as a romantic lead!
