Round Midnight (Bertrand Tavernier, USA/France, 1986)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
A lovingly gentle yet vibrant tribute to jazz, friendship and film itself, made by a director of consummate taste and precise imagination...
— Paul Attanasio, Washington Post

Real-life sax-legend Dexter Gordon stars as Dale Turner, a gifted black saxophonist with a drinking problem, who has relocated from New York to 1950s Paris, where he is able to play for a progressive, jazz-loving audience without being judged by his race. Dale becomes the project of a French fan (François Cluzet) who tries to help him fight his alcoholism, ultimately inspiring both Dale and his music... As well as Dexter Gordon himself, Round Midnight also features an amazing supporting cast of similarly great jazz giants, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Ron Carter and John McLaughlin - not to mention a memorable turn from great American director Martin Scorsese - here playing fast-talkin' New York-based promoter, Goodley... An rarely seen gem of a movie, Dexter Gordon received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Dale Turner, with Herbie Hancock winning the Oscar for Best Original Score.
