“Saturday Night Fever gets at something deeply romantic: the need to move, to dance, and the need to be who you’d like to be. Nirvana is the dance; when the music stops, you return to being ordinary...”
John Travolta stars as Tony Manero, a 19-year-old paint store clerk, who escapes the claustrophobic confines of his family life in Brooklyn, by spending the weekends high on uppers and dominating the dance floor of his local disco. When a big dance competition is announced and Tony manages to persuade the beautiful and talented Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) to be his partner, sparks soon begin to fly as Tony's chauvinism comes up against Staphanie's snobbishness... Saturday Night Fever was a commercial and cultural smash upon its release, made a star out of (the Oscar-nominated) Travolta and revitalised the career of the Bee Gees - who produced one of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time.
