[A] curt but definite masterpiece portraying frustration, solitude, and heartbreak...
— Roderick Heath, Film Freedonia

Part of The Chain. Linked to our screening of An Ideal Husband by the theme A Face From The Past!

Satyajit Ray favourite, Soumitra Chatterjee stars as Amitabha Ray, a Calcutta-based scriptwriter who is driving around the country to collect material for a film when his car breaks down near an estate. Fortunately for Amitabha he is offered accomodation for the night by the estate’s wealthy manager, but when Amitabha meets the manager's wife, Karuna (another Ray favourite, Madhavi Mukherjee) he is shocked to discover she is the woman he used to be in love with as a student... Exquisitely brief, this emotionally layered chamber piece is another of Ray's melancholy explorations of the human heart. (No trailer available.)
