Catch-22 (Mike Nichols, USA, 1970)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
Quite simply, the best American film I’ve seen this year.

Screened in tribute to Alan Arkin (1934 - 2023)

Stationed in the Mediterranean during World War II, Alan Arkin stars as Yossarian, a cynical bombardier desperate to escape from the insanity of the war. However, as he grapples with endless bureaucracy and the warped logic of his superiors, he soon comes to realise that insanity may be the only sane way to cope with a crazy situation... Adapted from Joseph Heller's classic satirical novel of the same name by the partnership behind The Graduate (Buck Henry and Mike Nichols) Catch-22 is Arkin's most famous role and the none-too-shabby supporting cast includes Orson Welles, Bob Balaban, Charles Grodin, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Austin Pendleton, Paula Prentiss, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Jon Voight and Martin Sheen.
