Venus (Roger Michell, UK, 2006)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
The great thing about Venus - apart from its sharp eye for the daily routines and drab details of senior citizenry in a buzzing metropolis - is that it isn’t soppy, or sentimental.

Screened in tribute to Roger Michell (1956 - 2021)

Director Roger Michell’s best-known film is Notting Hill bit for our tribute screening we’re treating you to some more local sights.

Peter O’Toole is Maurice, an ageing veteran actor living in Kentish Town (of all places). He becomes smitten with Jessie (Jodie Whittaker) the grand-niece of his closest friend and fellow thesp Ian (Leslie Phillips). When urbane and cultured Maurice tries to play Henry Higgins to Jessie’s provincial Eliza Doolittle, their give-and-take surprises them both.

The script’s by Hanif Kureshi and supporting cast includes Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Griffiths.

O’Toole received an Oscar nom for his charming and poignant performance and for locals, there’s plenty of locations you’ll recognise.
