McCabe & Mrs Miller (Robert Altman, USA, 1971)

Robert Altman has made a dozen films that can be called great in one way or another, but one of them is perfect, and that one is McCabe & Mrs. Miller.
— Roger Ebert

In tribute to Leonard Cohen we will be screening Robert Altman's brilliant "anti-Western". Warren Beatty and Julie Christie star as a gambler and brothel madame respectively who pool their resources in an attempt to make it rich in a snowbound settlement in the Old West. As funny as it desperately sad, McCabe and Mrs Miller's haunting power derives as much from the performances of the two leads as it does from Leonard Cohen's mournful soundtrack.
