Ageing belle, Blanche Dubois, moves in with her sister in New Orleans to recover from an emotional breakdown – but finds herself coming apart under the attentions of her brutish brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. Tennessee Williams adapted his own play for the screen, and Kazan reassembled most of the cast from his successful Broadway production, leading to his first on-screen collaboration with Marlon Brando.
