Rocky (John G. Avildsen, USA, 1976)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
Like the movies of Frank Capra, Rocky is a glowing tribute to the human spirit - a chin-up reminder that the decent, little guys of the world often accomplish the impossible if only because they try so hard.

Screened in tribute to Burt Young (1940 - 2023)

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a small-time boxer from a working-class Philadelphia neighbourhood, gets a million-to-one shot to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). While training with feisty former bantamweight contender Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith), Rocky tentatively begins a relationship with Adrian (Talia Shire), the wallflower sister of his meat-packer pal Paulie (Burt Young). Enormously entertaining - and 1976 Oscar winner for Best Picture - Rocky is irresistible in its depiction of an underachiever who has the courage to start all over again.
